What is the attendance policy?

- Absences - Parents must call the front office at (386) 822-6986 to notify the school that the student will be absent and for the absence to be marked excused. Parents can excuse up to 15 absences. All subsequent absences will require a doctor's note to be marked excused.
- Tardies - Students who arrive after 7:50 AM will be marked tardy. These students will need to be signed in at the front office by a parent / guardian and receive a tardy slip. Every 5 tardies and / or early checkouts equal 1 unexcused absence.
- Early Checkouts - Students who are picked up before 2:30/1:30 PM will be marked as having an early check-out. Every 5 early checkouts and / or tardies equal 1 unexcused absence.
- A Problem-Solving Team meeting will be scheduled for students who accumulate 10+ absences within a 90 calendar day period to discuss the attendance concern.
- Once a student accumulates 15 unexcused absences within a 90 calendar day period, they will be considered habitually truant and will be referred to the school social worker.
Please be aware that poor attendance is the highest predictor of academic difficulties. Make-up work sent home will never be an adequate substitute for classroom instruction, so parents are highly encouraged to promote good school attendance beginning in Kindergarten.
Okay, but my child is sick... How bad does it have to be for him / her to have to stay home from school?
Your child should stay home if s/he:
Please be sure to call the front office at (386) 822-6986 to inform the school about your child's absence. If you take your child to the doctor, please be sure to turn in a doctor's note to the front office so that the absence can be marked excused. Your child should stay home if s/he:
- Has a fever of 100.0 degrees or higher
- Has been vomiting or has diarrhea
- Has symptoms that keep him/her from participating in school, such as:
- Very tired or lack of appetite
- Cough that s/he cannot control, sneezing often (can spread to others)
- Headache, body aches, earache
- Sore throat (a little sore is OK, but a bad sore throat could be strep throat, even if there is no fever. Other signs of strep throat in children are a headache and upset stomach, or rash. Call your doctor if your child has these signs. A special test is needed to know if it is strep throat.)
- Fever - Keep your child home until the fever has been gone without medicine for 24 hours. Colds can be contagious for at least 48 hours. Returning to school too soon may slow recovery and make others sick.
- Vomiting or Diarrhea - Keep your child home 24 hours after the last time s/he vomited or had diarrhea.
- Antibiotics - Keep your child home until 24 hours after the first dose of antibiotics for anything like an ear infection or strep throat.
